CDMA, GSM Mobile Phones to Have 11 Digit Numbers

DoT ( Department of Telecom) is currently thinking to make all GSM and CDMA mobile phone numbers to 11 digits instead of the present 10 .Most probably 9 will be prefixed to all existing numbers .

Apparently, the approximate base limit of 10 digit numbers is 450 million subscribers( all nerds can calculate the permutation ), which is likely to get exhausted as soon as by early next year.
According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), India’s total wireless subscribers (GSM, CDMA & WLL(F)) base was recorded to be 375.74 million at the end of February 2009.

Only , two countries UK and China currently have a 11 digit number . We would be the third country . (A great achievement )

In 2003 , DoT had said that the changeover from 10 digits to 11 digits would likely be not required for another 30 more years . ( A few minor calculations what else can one say )

If implemented , we would have lots of work to do . (Editing all contacts , remembering an extra digit etc )
